Metal poles structures for UAV protection

To protect territories and facilities from UAVs, protective enclosing structures are used, including systems based on steel cables. Their placement requires a reliable supporting system — metal poles and spatial structures. The AMIRA Group of Companies designs and manufactures such metal structures in accordance with the requirements of the design solution.

Metal poles for protective structures

SP 542.1325800.2024 «Protective enclosing structures against unmanned aerial vehicles» (a set of construction rules used in the Russian Federation). The construction rules stipulate that protective enclosing structures (PECS) include metal poles and spatial supporting structures, protective cable structures, and bracing elements. The metal poles serve to attach the protective elements and bear the loads specified in the construction design. When developing metal structures, permanent, installation, wind, ice, and other loads are taken into account. Special effects associated with the fall of a UAV and an explosion are also calculated for protective structures. The design solution for the protective system is developed by the design organization. It determines the level of protection, the type of structure, the loads, the placement requirements, and other initial data. Based on these, the specialists of the AMIRA Group of Companies develop and calculate the metal supports and other load‑bearing elements necessary to implement the solution.

What this might look like on a bridge

A schematic appearance. The structures are developed individually for each project

One of the possible applications is the protection of bridge crossings.

Anchor metal poles may be installed at the starting and ending points of the bridge; intermediate supports may be installed between them, if necessary. Their number and location are determined by the length of the bridge span and the calculations. Protective cable structures are tensioned between the supporting structures. Their type, number, and characteristics are also determined by the project.

SP 542.1325800.2024 provides for four levels of protection for a facility against UAVs. The composition of the protective elements and the effects taken into account during the design depend on the chosen level of protection and the characteristics of the facility.

Why it is better to provide separate metal poles

Installing additional protective structures on already existing metal poles, masts, or lightning rods requires checking their load‑bearing capacity; as a rule, such a large safety margin is not provided. Therefore, it is advisable to develop protective support structures as a separate design solution.

If the project provides for protection of the facility from UAVs using metal poles and cable structures, the specialists of the AMIRA Group will select and calculate the metal structures in accordance with the specified requirements and manufacture them.
